Art & Culinary Tourism in McAllen!
We began our our day at the Mc2 Creative Incubator in McAllen. Greg Schuller gave us a guided tour of the Creative Incubator which is a renovated school that now rents out the classrooms to local artists to use as studios.
A trolley picked us up and took us to the McAllen Heritage Center. There, we were able to tour the museum & view a video about the history of McAllen.
Once we left the McAllen Heritage Center, the trolley then took us to The Patio on Guerra. This is restaurant housed in one of McAllen’s earliest buildings dating back to 1912.
We were then seated and served our choice of Avocado stuffed with Chicken/Shrimp or Chicken Envueltos. Once we ate our wonderful meal, Melissa Guerra, sister-in-law of Becky Guerra (Owner of The Patio on Guerra), discussed with us her passion: Texas & Mexican cuisine.
Melissa Guerra is a self taught culinary expert who has hosted the cooking show, “The Texas Provincial Kitchen,” which was produced in San Antonio at KLRN, & aired on PBS. Melissa has published her second book“Dishes from the Wild Horse Desert” which was released in May of 2006. She also owns and operates a catalog, website & storefront dedicated to providing top quality Mexican kitchenware and ingredients to customers all over the world.
After our meal and presentation, we traveled back to the MC2 Creative Incubator for presentations and our business meeting.
Leticia Flores, Lower South Texas Regional Representative of Economic Development & Tourism, in the Office of the Governor gave the presentation, “State of Texas: Economic Development & Tourism Overview.”
Valerie Bates, Marketing Director for the City of Port Isabel & Texas Tropical Trail Region Vice Chair, gave the presentation “How to Get Found – Integrating Social Media Into Your Website.”
